Polish Heritage Commission by OUTSIDE
In May 2024 I was commissioned by OUTSIDE to create an installation on the Polish Heritage Archway in Leek, to commemorate the Battle of Monte Cassino and celebrate the Polish community here. Together with artist Kate Powell and the pupils from St. Mary’s Catholic Academy, we created this piece as a tribute to Polish bravery and the sacrifices made during this historic battle.
For the installation, we crafted felt poppies in red and white - a symbolic nod to the Polish flag and to the powerful military song, “The Red Poppies on Monte Cassino.” Each poppy represents resilience and remembrance, bringing to life a piece of Polish heritage right here in the heart of our town.
In addition to the felt poppies, I created red sun prints using foraged plants from Blackshaw Moor, each print infused with the natural textures and colours of the local landscape. These prints became part of the installation, bridging a sense of place between Leek and the stories we were honouring from afar.
The unveiling of the artwork coincided with the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino - a pivotal day to remember the courage of Polish troops who fought and achieved victory against great odds.
This project is part of a broader programme of events with The Leek Polish Connection, a wonderful community group dedicated to preserving and celebrating Polish culture in Leek.
Thanks to OUTSIDE, Den Engel, The Leek Polish Connection & St Mary’s Catholic Academy.
